Alternative TV

The Image Has Cracked

The Alternative TV Collection (Anagram Punk Collectors Series/Cherry Red)

For a while there back in the late 70s Mark Perry and his Sniffin’ Glue zine were ground zero in the UK “punk” scene. After leaving the zine world behind Mark P. and Alex (“Nobody”) Fergusson begin to make waves as Alternative TV. The duo were definitely not interested in becoming one of the now clichéd chainsaw brigade and so Perry and Fergusson mashed up their enjoyment of all things weird (Can, Beefheart and the like) to reggae forms and other avant-style treatments. I wouldn’t say that everything included here in this extended version of the original Image Has Cracked LP release has aged that well but for my money I would easily rank  the “How Much Longer” 45, it’s flipside  “You Bastard” and the fantastic “Life” as genuine classics of “punk” during the ’76-’77 period.

Currently passes the time by playing the odd gig or two, shaking his head, wringing his hands and pondering whether or not the tape vaults of the legendary Pirates are really exhausted.
