{"id":2352,"date":"2015-06-16T11:49:36","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T10:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eyeplug.net\/magazine\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2011-07-15T13:31:50","modified_gmt":"2011-07-15T13:31:50","slug":"nick-lowe-to-release-first-new-album-in-four-years-on-12-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eyeplug.net\/magazine\/nick-lowe-to-release-first-new-album-in-four-years-on-12-september\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Lowe to release first new album in four years on 12 September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Evergreen legend Nick Lowe has announced that \u2018The Old Magic\u2019, his first studio album since 2007, is to be issued by Proper records on 12 September 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I&#8217;m sixty-one years old now, Lord I never thought I&#8217;d see 30,\u2019 Nick Lowe sings on \u2018Checkout Time,\u2019 a song from the new disc.\u00a0The line cuts right to the quick.\u00a0 He was very busy in his 20\u2019s spending time \u2018not fitting into three successive movements: pub rock, punk and new wave\u2019 according to the New York Times.\u00a0 But Lowe has mined fertile new creative ground in recent years and the eleven tracks on <em>The Old Magic<\/em> dig deeper still.\u00a0 As National Public Radio in the US observed, \u2018Few musicians get better with age.\u00a0 Nick Lowe is an exception.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em>The Old Magic<\/em> was recorded in London with Lowe&#8217;s crack backing band anchored by Geraint Watkins (keyboards), Steve Donnelly (guitar), and Robert Treherne (a.k.a. Bobby Irwin, drums).\u00a0 Additional musicians include Ron Sexsmith, Paul Carrack, and Jimmie Vaughan among others.\u00a0 The album was co-produced by Lowe, Neil Brockbank, and Treherne.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amid urbanely insistent grooves (\u2018Sensitive Man\u2019), and spare-yet-imposing shuffles (the aforementioned \u2018Checkout Time\u2019), \u2018The Old Magic\u2019 features three exceptional, recently road-tested Lowe ballads &#8211; album opener \u2018Stoplight Roses,\u2019 \u2018House for Sale\u2019 and \u2018I Read A Lot.\u2019\u00a0 Then there\u2019s \u2018Restless Feeling,\u2019 a shimmering dance tune worthy of the roller rink that Lowe wrote for a fictional band he calls Coastline.\u00a0 As is his custom, Lowe also peppers \u2018The Old Magic\u2019 with three covers \u2013 by Elvis Costello, Tom T.
