Sittin\u2019 Idol<\/strong>, formed in the mountains of Calgary, have been rockin\u2019 stages all across Canada. They have come a long way with an entirely epic journey from partying with Damageplan in 2004 to releasing their latest endeavors with \u201cLandmark\u201d. The guys of Sittin\u2019 Idol added bassist Greg Kristianson to the band, an amazing new addition to the line-up. Sittin\u2019 Idol has toured with many prominent bands, which has really helped to mould the band. From their formation in 1997 to where they are now, they have come to make their own Mountain Rock inspired unique sound, leaving audiences all across the board in wonderment of their angular audio. The new album \u201cLandmark\u201d shows that Sittin\u2019 Idol has truly come a long way from playing in bars, to getting their name out there, surfacing with the utmost creative juices to start off 2013. They took some time out to speak with eyeplug.net<\/p>\n

01 How did you get started in music?<\/h3>\n

My mother is a singer & always had music in the house. I went nuts when I heard Heavy Metal and how powerful the drums were. I had to do it!<\/p>\n

02 Where did your direction come from?<\/h3>\n

I always had good band leaders in my school bands and had two great drum teachers.<\/p>\n

03 Who were your major influences and inspirations and who do you despise?<\/h3>\n

My biggest influences are Tool, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden to name a few. The individuals in Sittin\u2019 Idol have some very different tastes, so it\u2019s hard to provide influences that apply to the whole band. I am not fond of Justin Bieber, he is very much a blemish on anything Canadian.<\/p>\n

04 What inspires you to make your current type of songs and sound?<\/h3>\n

The inspiration comes from frustration with the state of society, life experiences and the constant desire to grow as musicians and utilize that growth in new music.<\/p>\n

05 What can someone who has never seen you live before expect from your live shows then & possibly even now?<\/h3>\n

We are twice as heavy live as we are on our albums. Our singer has quite the sense of humor on stage and when playing for a virgin \u201cIdol\u201d audience we usually stick to our heavier \/ more up tempo material.<\/p>\n

06 How do you begin your songs? What types of themes and subjects do you deal with?<\/h3>\n

Our songwriting starts with jamming on new riff ideas and recording the jams. We let the songs develop at a natural pace. A song idea might take 2 years to complete or 2 days. Lyrically, we typically write about personal experiences. We do enjoy folk music though and have written a few songs about historical events.<\/p>\n

07 How did your music evolved since you first began playing?<\/h3>\n

Our songs have consistently gotten more progressive rhythmically, structurally and dynamically as our musicianship has improved.<\/p>\n

08 What has been your biggest challenge? Were you been able to overcome this? If so, how?<\/h3>\n

The biggest challenge with this band has been losing two bass players. Both times could have resulted in the end of the band. Getting through it was as simple as believing that the band was worth fighting for and getting extremely lucky with each new member. There is likely some truth to the concept of \u201cmaking your own luck\u201d if you want something bad enough.<\/p>\n

09 Do you play covers? If you could pick any song, which would you like to cover most and why?<\/h3>\n

We covered Pink Floyd\u2019s \u201cShine On You Crazy Diamond\u201d on our second album. We don\u2019t do any other covers presently. If we want to cover something we will likely drastically change the song arrangement to suit our sound. We used to do a really heavy cover of Aerosmith\u2019s \u201cRound & Round\u201d & Tool\u2019s \u201cSweat\u201d live.<\/p>\n

10 Where did you envisage being in five years time?<\/h3>\n

Top of the pop charts of course! On second thought, hopefully promoting a new album and being twice the musicians we are presently.<\/p>\n

11 Who would you most like to record with?<\/h3>\n

As for producers, either Rick Rubin or Nick Raskulinecz would be really interesting. Both have made great records with bands we love. My personal pipe dream is to make a record of original material with James Hetfield.<\/p>\n

12 What should we be expecting from you in the near future?<\/h3>\n

We are working on making the whole world aware of our album \u201cLandmark\u201d as we feel it is by far our best work. We have also compiled some good sounding live recordings of older tunes that we are gradually making available to fans that have made contact with us. We\u2019ll also be gigging as much as we can to promote \u201cLandmark\u201d live.<\/p>\n
